Mobile handset market surged at a whooping 24% in 2005, says Telecom Trends International

Leading market researcher reports Nokia remained at the top spot but Motorola had fastest growth

Global mobile phone growth driven by emerging markets

Falls Church, Virginia; January 26, 2006 − With the global mobile handset market growing at a phenomenal rate of 24 percent, vendors shipped 796 million mobile phones worldwide in 2005, according to leading market researcher Telecom Trends International, Inc.

 

In a research report, Telecom Trends International said Motorola solidified its number two position in the market by registering an impressive growth of 40%. Nokia grew at 28%, increasing its share and solidifying its grip on the market as the top vendor. LG retained its share, but the shares of Samsung and Sony Ericsson declined slightly.

“Nokia and Motorola have increased their combined share to over 50% of the market, said Naqi Jaffery, President of Telecom Trends International, Inc. The top five vendors control 78 percent of the market, he said.

 

The primary factor contributing to the surge in the handset market was the growth taking place in the emerging markets, Mr. Jaffery said. In the industrialized world, on the other hand, most of the growth is coming from replacements and upgrades, he said.
