Ericsson and Nortel Top Suppliers of Next-Gen Mobile Gear, says Telecom Trends InternationalTDMA Markets Real Battleground for 2.5/3G Deployment Contracts Comprehensive Assessment Offers Operators Advise on the Pros and Cons of Technology Options Telecom Trends International (TTI) has ranked Ericsson as the top supplier of next-generation mobile infrastructure in terms of revenue. In a 2003 report, 3G Mobile Networks: Vendor Positioning and Deployment Strategies, the research firm estimates that Ericssons share of the 2.5/3G mobile infrastructure market to be 20.9 percent. The next vendor in terms of market position is Nortel Networks with a share of 19.0 percent. The other two companies with market shares in double digits are Nokia and Lucent Technologies. The Siemens/NEC alliance ranks the next followed by Motorola. The other significant players in the market are Samsung and Alcatel. The report also estimates the market shares for both the major technology families. According to the report, Ericsson is the global leader in WCDMA equipment revenue and Lucent leads the market in CDMA2000 equipment revenue. The report also presents vendor market shares for each of the major regions. According to Charles Ufongene, PhD, the primary author of the study, Our research showed that those companies were most successful who pursued most of the major markets with a portfolio covering most of the major technologies. The 2.5/3G deployment scene has boiled down to a battle between two technology families: cdmaOne/CDMA2000 and GPRS/EDGE/WCDMA, Dr. Ufongene said. The real battlegrounds are the TDMA markets where operators are still trying to decide which technology family to switch to, he said. This report is the most comprehensive assessment of 2.5/3G deployments to-date. The report discusses at length the pros and cons for TDMA operators of switching to each of the technology families, and presents operators with options to consider. In addition to standalone reports, TTI offers a customizable Mobile Networks Information Service (MMIS). Vendor Share of Global 2.5G/3G Mobile Wireless Infrastructure Revenue, July 2003
